a little more, it seems, than before
sometimes, with each step home,
up the stairs.
Not pain
merely percussion
the bones' repetition,
the years more than known
already ancient in early adulthood?

The second hand on this broken wall-clock would find itself in good company with the likes of Tantalus, Ixion, and Sisyphus. It jumps its way a quarter of an inch, condemned only to fall again; and yet its crime was only a kind of sloth and forgetfulness.

Der Sekundenzeiger dieser kaputten Wanduhr würde sich in guter Gesellschaft finden, mit Seelen wie Tantalus, Ixion, und Sisyphus. Der springt auf seinem Weg nur ein viertel Zoll, verurteilt nur wieder zurück abzusinken; und doch, seine Untat war nur eine Art von Trägheit und Vergesslichkeit.

Gehen wir unbewusst durchs Leben
ohne Fesseln, uferlos
auch wenn der Starrblick
auf den eigenen zwei Füßen
an den man steht ist,
und tausendmal die Sonne begrüßt
wortlos und wachsam
